Brickwood Tooting is the latest offering from award-winning, eponymous chain of three Antipodean South London-based cafes. Occupying a cosy corner of Tooting Market (two minutes from Tooting Broadway Underground), the welcoming staff, hipster interiors and buzzing atmosphere all serve as a clear indicator of what’s to come. The food was good and the coffee provided by Bulleats favourite, Caravan.

Food: 6/10

Huevos rancheros: two fried eggs, salsa, avocado, sour cream and chorizo on open tortillas
The lightly toasted tortillas, perfectly ripe avocado, and the quality of the chorizo all added up to a fantastic dish – delicious and balanced. The combination of flavours and textures was spot-on, and would eagerly return for more.

Brioche French toast with hints of orange zest and cinnamon, sided with mascarpone and topped with caramelised bananas
A disappointment given the previous dish and the rave reviews. This dish was let down by a sweetness that overpowered any possible flavours, and an overuse of mushy textures (perhaps opting for a bacon topping would have overcome this). Visually this was served as a plate of sliced potatoes amidst a further mass of beige. Unfortunately this was not visually appetising nor flavourful – sorry guys!

Service: 7/10

Attentive and friendly.

Price: High street

In conclusion: Nice, standard, brunchy place to go, with a good selection of the typical Oz-inspired fare. If you are in the area, definitely head in for the huevos rancheros. Next time I would also opt for the grilled banana & walnut bread with espresso butter which came highly recommended and looked very appealing.

Gram-worthy table top view
Beautiful huevos rancheros
See what we mean about the potatoes?
